Oregon: The Last Vestage of U.S. Skiable Snow

With several permanent glaciers, Oregon’s 11,235-foot Mt. Hood is America’s only year-round ski area. It once served as the summer training ground for the U.S. Olympic Ski Team. Timberline Lodge ski resort (503.272.3311) operates six chairlifts on Mt. Hood with 1,500 vertical feet of skiing on 1,000 skiable acres. From the Palmer Glacier snowfield, Timberline hosts a number of camps for both skiers and snowboarders.

The Timberline Summer Ski Camp, Mt. Hood’s longest-running race camp, also operates from Palmer Glacier snowfield. TSRC participants ski on courses using the latest in breakaway gates configured for slalom, GS, Super G, NASTAR, and even dual racing courses. Experts show you how to bolt from the starting gates and how to select the best lines through each course. Videotape analysis of each skier’s performance is also included in the program.

For non-racers looking to improve their skills, TSRC offers week-long programs on skiing bumps, jumps, and varied terrain and snow conditions.

Practically Speaking
Fireplace rooms Timberline Lodge run $180 per night. The resort also features a four-star restaurant. Additional lodging is also available in bordering towns. The cost for the one-week MHSSC camp, including six nights lodging and five days of lifts is $980 per person. TSRC programs are offered between June and September.
