Herb O’Brien’s passion for skiing helped him become an industry leader time and time again.
The water ski and wakeboard industry lost a true innovator of the sport Monday with the passing of Herb O’Brien. Herb’s contributions to the sport were many, from designing the first production tunnel-bottom water ski to helping shape the first production wakeboard, and fueling the growth of new sport.
Marketing, sales, R&D, Herb did it all along the way, and at one point or another was deeply entrenched in all aspects of the business. Known by his employees as a hard-worker who deeply cared about their well-being, and acknowledged among his peers as a pioneer, these career highlights touch on his influence in water sports:
- Started O’Brien skis in 1964
- Started HO Sports in 1981
- Designed first production tunnel-bottom water ski
- First person to go into production with a compression-molded fiberglass wakeboard and kneeboard
- 2001 Water Ski Hall of Fame Award of Distinction recipient
- Named one of WATERSKI’S 25 Icons of the industry in 2003
- Founded Square One in 2006 (the parent company of Ronix Wakeboards and Radar Skis)
- R.I.P Herb O’Brien 1944-2012
Let us remember Herb O’Brien by pulling the first HO Water Sports promo video from 1986. Enjoy!
