If Michael Phelps were a country, how would he rank in the medal standings?
Michael Phelps now stands alone as the most decorated Olympian of all time. He earned gold in the 200m individual marking his 20th Olympic medal, and his second gold of these Games.
Compared to the rest of the world he would be ahead of Georgia, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Chile, Israel, the old Russian Empire and Tunisia. Phelps only slightly trails India, Taiwan, Portugal, Nigeria and Thailand.
The old record was held by gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won 18 medals including nine golds while competing for the Soviet Union.
Through Friday (8/3), Phelps has 16 gold medals, two silvers, and two bronze. Now if ‘The Person Republic of Michael Phelps’ existed he would be 57th in the world league table of Olympic medal winners on total medals. Dara Torres stands in a distant second in terms of all-time US swimmers with 12 medals, including four golds.
If you were to use rank him using the International Olympic Committee’s scale (where gold has the most weight), he would actually be 48th.
